Like me, this page is a work in progress
My videos are from a lived experience perspective mixed with current research and knowledge. As should be the case, I am always learning and growing so my perspectives and understanding will change and evolve over time too. However the basis of all my work and beliefs is that #HowWeAreWithpeopleMatters … a lot! The videos below were made as an informal tool. I have since learnt more about my history so some information needs updated. For example, I speak about having 3 courses of ECT but actually had 6. My plan is to develop more around some of the topics mentioned in ‘Focus Areas’.

Click above link to view video: June 2020
A brief reflection on three things which I believe can support not just someone healing from trauma, but anyone. Life is challenging for us all and the need to be seen, heard and valued is universal.
Self-harm & the emergency department. A kindness never forgotten #MHAW2020
I talk about stigma & judgement being treated for self-harm and how I will never forget the kindness of one nurse in the Emergency Department.
Talking about my experiences of suicidal crises, addressing some myths and stigma, looking at the role of mental health services, safety planning and how to be with people in distress. A list of resources and contacts can be found on this site. Thanks to Aneesh and David for trusting me with this very important and sensitive topic! May 2021
Safety and Crisis Planning in Mental Health Services
Click above link to view video: May 2020
I talk about my own experience of safety/crisis planning. How meaningful safety planning in services must not be a tick box exercise but requires safe, trusting relationships, time, education and self-awareness. They are dynamic and should not only be focused on mitigating against risk but building a meaningful life.
The MH narrative arising from Covid19: A lived experience perspective
Click above link to view video: May 2020
I talk about how my experience in the mental health system drives my desire to open new conversations about mental health, emotional wellbeing and the importance of embedding trauma-informed values into organizations. This is important for those needing and staff working in services. I discuss why lived experience voice is so important and how this conversation is relevant across healthcare and not limited to mental health services.
Attitudes: A lived experience perspective on self-harm
Click above link to view video: May 2020
I hope to challenge negative attitudes and stigma towards people who self-harm by sharing my own journey with this complex issue. There is a person behind every behaviour. I discuss the links between trauma, self-harm and suicidal behaviour and give my perspective on what can be done to support staff working with people who struggle with these issues. There are many different reasons why people self-harm. This is my experience.
Coming Home
This is a synopsis of my journey from a life defined by mental illness to one beyond labels. What helped facilitate this process and what I think could help improve the experiences of both staff and those using services. I talk about how my journey links to evidence from research about what helps people heal emphasising that everyone is unique and the issues complex. Trauma informed approaches where relationships are at the heart of change is the core of this message. In the video I talk about staff and those with lived experience for the purpose of differentiating between those using and providing the service, but of course any one of us can need mental health services.

“ As an educator it is crucial to introduce students to both the art and science of mental health nursing. The videos that Lisa has produced capture the essence of what we see on the surface and the reality of what lies underneath and the need for care, compassion, and kindness always. They have proven to be an excellent educational tool that can provoke and promote deep discussion and learning with coproduction at its heart. As a mother supporting a young autistic adult these videos helped me to step back and manage my emotions and to translate theory in to practice. I would highly recommend these videos to educators who want to engage on a deeper and more meaningful level with their students and to all who wish to develop a better more informed understanding”.
